Gyms Empty On New Year's Despite Resolutions

Bookmark and Share

Sioux Empire Fitness in Sioux Falls opened their doors bright and early on New Year's Day, but for a normally popular gym it was looking rather empty.

“We're not seeing a lot of people coming in yet, but I think people get through the holiday and the New Year and then they start to think about their resolutions and what they're going to do and then you get a good response after that,” said Bill Carpenter.

Carpenter is the Operations Manager at the fitness center and said he isn't surprised by the rows of empty machines this early on.

“During the holidays I think people are just focused on having a good time and enjoying the season so we anticipate that there will be a lot more of a response in the next few days,” said Carpenter.

Losing weight is a popular pledge for many around this time of year, but unfortunately many fail to reach their goal.

“A lot of people tend to come in and make sort of knee-jerk resolutions and they get started but they don't stay with it. They don't stay consistent with it the way that they should," said Carpenter.

Carpenter said not only having a regular exercise program is essential, but also watching what you eat is key to shedding the weight.

“Diet is important, exercise is important and sleep is important. All these things work together," said Carpenter.

While working out and eating right are great New Year's Resolutions, it's important to remember that results don't happen overnight.

“A lot of people don't realize it takes a lot longer to take weight off or get healthy or develop the kinds of things that you want to then it does to say to add some pounds," said Carpenter.

The fitness center offers weight loss programs with a professional trainer to help keep off the weight in 2013.
