Track Crime In Sioux Falls With New App

Bookmark and Share

If you've ever seen a police car stopped in your neighborhood or entering your neighbor's home, you've probably wondered what's going on.

On Wednesday, the Sioux Falls Police Department introduced a program called ‘Crime Reports’ to help you find out exactly that.

“We just want people to be aware of what's happening in their neighborhood and this is a really easy and simple-to-use tool for people to use to see what's going on around them," said Officer Sam Clemens of the Sioux Falls Police Department.

Citizens can access the crime data map by clicking here . The site provides you with a map of Sioux Falls and by zooming in on a specific area, you can view the different incidents that have been reported.

“It's going to give people a good indication of what it happening in their area,” said Clemens.

The program allows citizens to track specific crimes and get email notifications when they happen in their neighborhood.

“People are able to follow different things so if they’re looking for property crimes or burglaries, they can follow that type of stuff. If there are any violent crimes, they can track that stuff,” said Clemens.

The website is an updated version of an older crime data tool citizens were able to access in the past.

“The other one people would go and check and it had some usefulness to it, but this is a little bit better and has a little bit more detail of breaking down different types of crime,” said Clemens.

The newer tool even link's the state's sex offender registry, allowing citizens to see sex offender information and their locations in Sioux Falls. Not only does the website provide you with detailed information, it allows you to submit tips if you see a crime trend in your area.

“One of the bigger hopes with having those details out there is that if people see something in the neighborhood, people can go online and see that there were quite a few of these reports that were taken and we might get some more victims out of that say well if all these people reported it I should as well,” said Clemens.

The total cost for the new software is just under $7,000 per year compared to the old software that cost almost $24,000 per year. The crime map is also available as an app for your iPhone.
