2012 by the Numbers

Bookmark and Share

It is now 2013, but we continue to marvel at just how unusual 2012 really was; near record heat and drought that hasn’t been seen around here in quite sometime.  But now we know the official damage, so to speak.  This will go down as a second place tie for the warmest year on record in Sioux Falls.  It will be the second warmest year on record for Aberdeen and the third warmest years on record for Watertown and Sisseton.  Just about every other location posted their top ten warmest year since official records began in the late 1800’s.  Of course, it was not just warm around here, much of the U.S. was toasty with over 90 cities recording their warmest year on record and a couple dozen more with their 2nd or 3rd warmest years.  But before you start to panic about how much sea ice and polar ice melted in 2012 because of this heat, here is a sobering statistic; the world was less than a tenth of a degree above normal!  This pretty much solidifies the notion that North America was really the only continent above normal because all of the others ended up balancing it out and leading to a normal year in temperatures globally.  Below is a list of the final numbers from more than a dozen cities across our area along with cities in the U.S. that posted record or near record warmth.  More on the upcoming couple of storms will be posted in our next blog sometime midweek.

(Red dots represent cities that had their warmest year on record. Blug dots represent cities that had their 2nd or 3rd warmest year on record)
