SD Senate Panel Approves University Funding Plan

Bookmark and Share

A South Dakota Senate committee has approved a plan
intended to give state universities their fair share of any increases in state
revenue.

The measure does not require that the governor and the Legislature fund the
six universities at any particular level, but it suggests a formula that would
base some funding on the schools' performance.

The proposed formula would first give universities extra funding each year
to account for inflation. They then could get extra money to cover increased
enrollment and additional programs. The schools also could get added funding for
expanding research and producing graduates in some technical fields.

A new state council would set goals and performance measures for
universities and the state's technical institutes.

The measure next goes to the full Senate.
