There are hundreds of homeless people in the Sioux Empire and many organizations and individuals make it their mission to help those who can't help themselves.
On Thursday, the Sioux Empire Homeless Coalition recognized four people in the community who go above and beyond the call of duty when it comes to helping the homeless. They honored them with the "Unsung Hero Award."
Each year the coalition asks for nominations for the award, which is meant for a person who greatly serves the homeless community, often outside of the public view. The announcement was a surprise for all four winners who were nominated by one of their co-workers or friends.
“I really had no idea I was nominated and it was quite overwhelming because I really don't see myself doing anything different than anyone else. I just do my little part everyday,” said award recipient, Helen Vander Werff.
The winners received a plaque with their name on it and a description of what they do to benefit the homeless community.
