New legislation in Pierre would allow for school boards to create “school sentinels”.
These are people that would be allowed to carry a gun in school. School employees, security guards, or volunteers can be utilized as sentinels.
Governor Daugaard says he hasn’t decided how he feels about the idea. The governor has not read the house bill and says he would not offer an opinion until he does.
Democratic Representative Bernie Hunhoff says he has a lot of concerns and the senate should not rush into anything.
Hunoff does say there may be situations, especially in rural school settings, when school officials may want the option of arming an employee.
