BROOKINGS, S.D. — DeAirra Goss tallied a game-high 22 points and Dawn Luster added all seven of her points in the final three minutes tolift IUPUI to a 57-56 win over league-leading South Dakota State in Summit League women’s basketball action Saturday afternoon at Frost Arena.

The Jaguars, who recorded their first-ever win over SDSU, improved to 10-8 overall and 4-2 in The Summit League. The Jackrabbits, who had their eight-game winning streak snapped, dropped to 14-6 overall and 6-1 inleague play.

IUPUI led for all but seven seconds in the final 27 minutes of the game. Kerah Nelson, who scored all 11 over her points in the first half, gave the Jaguars a 16-15 lead with a traditional three-point play, sparking a 10-2 run. Trailing by six, SDSU knotted the game at 23-all on a basket by Gabrielle Boever with seven seconds remaining before Katie Comello gave IUPUI the lead for good with a jumper at the halftime buzzer.

The Jaguars carried the momentum into the second half, opening the stanza with three consecutive three-pointers to open a 34-25 advantage. Comello hit the first two treys, with Goss adding another.

The IUPUI lead grew to 10 points with 13 minutes to play before the Jackrabbits closed to within a point, 40-39, with 9:20 remaining on a steal and layup by Boever.

After IUPUI built its lead back to six moments later, SDSU again drew back to within a point at 45-44 on a three-point play by Ashley Eide — the first points of the afternoon for the Jackrabbits’ leading scorer.

Once again, the Jaguars had the answer from long distance. Goss nailed a three-pointer to beat the shot clock buzzer and Luster hit trifectas from either wing on the next two possessions to put IUPUI back up by six, 54-48, with a little more than two minutes to play.

The Jackrabbits had two chances to tie the game in the final 25 seconds left as Leah Dietel scored inside and was fouled. However, Dietel missed the free throw and Goss converted two free throws on the other end to put IUPUI up 56-53. With under 10 seconds remaining, Eide’s three-point attempt was no good and Luster sealed the win by making one of two free throws.

Boever hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to provide the final margin and give her a career-high 15 points. Tara Heiser and Katie Lingle each added 11 points off the bench for the Jackrabbits.

Despite starting 0-for-5 from the field, the Jackrabbits held the upper hand for most of the first half. Heiser scored SDSU’s first seven points as the Jackrabbits led by four points on four different occasions, the last at 15-11 following a basket by Dietel with 8:07 to play in the front half.

SDSU never got on track with its perimeter shooting, going a dismal 3-for-23 from three-point range. Overall, the Jackrabbits were 19-of-54 from the field, 35.2 percent, and an efficient 15-of-17 at the free throw line, 88.2 percent. The Jackrabbits did not attempt a free throw in the first half.

IUPUI ended the afternoon 19-of-44 from the field, 43.2 percent, including 7-of-15 from three-point range. The Jaguars made 6-of-10 long-range attempts in the second half. IUPUI made 12-of-17 at the line, 70.6 percent, and held a 36-27 rebounding advantage.

Dee-Dee Bellamy led all players with nine rebounds for the Jaguars. Lingle led SDSU with seven boards.

The Jackrabbits return to action next Saturday (Jan. 26) at Omaha. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. at Sapp Fieldhouse on the University of Nebraska-Omaha campus.
