Sunday Morning Snow Totals

Bookmark and Share

Although this morning’s snowfall was nothing impressive, it’s just another piece of the puzzle that made this weekend so active here in the KDLT Weather Center. Obviously, our active weekend kicked off with a rapid change in temperature as we talked about in our previous blog post.  Sunday morning brought a few changes of its own, though.

Not all of us saw measurable snowfall this Sunday morning, but thanks to our extremely cold temperatures; snow totals were a little more impressive than some of our models were predicting. Although some of our models were off by about an inch or so, the positioning seemed to be spot on. In our previous blog, you can see how our Futurecast Snowfall tracked this area of moisture from northwest to southeast. Along with the positioning, it also handled the timing extremely well. By the early afternoon hours, most of the snow had already exited our region for the most part as it moved into central Iowa.

Here’s a look at the most recent reports of snowfall totals across our region. It seemed as though the heaviest snowfall, while isolated in many cases, fell in a straight line from central portions of our region into NW Iowa. Lake Herman just outside of Madison reported 3 inches of snow while areas along the periphery of the snow bands, such as Brookings and Vermillion, picked up about a half inch.

Of course, now that the snowfall is out of here and skies are beginning to clear to some extend; temperatures are dropping very quickly. This, as we mentioned in our previous blog, coupled with breezy conditions are making for very dangerous wind chills. Here’s a look at the counties that are under Wind Chill Advisories through Tuesday morning at 6 a.m. These areas will likely experience wind chills below -20° for a long period of time.

On top of that, Wind Chill Warnings are in effect until Noon Monday for our East River counties roughly along and north of US 212. Brookings and Hamlin Counties, which are both south of US 212, are also included along with a few of our SW Minnesota counties. This warning is a bit more urgent as wind chills will likely exceed -20° and -30° for several hours. This will lead to an increased threat of frost bite and/or hypothermia for those who are not dressed appropriately. Of course, we want you to be safe in these hazardous conditions, so we ask that you use extreme caution and stay warm.

As always, we will continue to update you with the very latest on these extremely cold conditions right here on KDLT and KDLT.com.
