SD House Panel Kills Crackdown on Repeat Speeders

Bookmark and Share

A South Dakota legislative panel has rejected a measure that would have allowed state officials to suspend the licenses of drivers who repeatedly speed.

State law now says drivers can lose their licenses if they accumulate too many points for moving violations that include drunken driving or running a stop sign. But no points are assessed for speeding.

The bill's main sponsor, Rep. Steve Hickey of Sioux Falls, says assessing points for speeding would save lives by making chronic drivers slow down. He says fines alone have not prevented some drivers from speeding.

The House Transportation Committee voted 9-4 to kill the bill after opponents said it would inconvenience many drivers just to crack down on a few hundred who repeatedly speed.
