Firefighters must undergo a great deal of training before they are certified, but the training doesn’t stop there.
Several times throughout the year, Sioux Falls Fire Rescue spends a day training for several different scenarios.
Since many fires break out during the winter months, Wednesday afternoon’s cold conditions made for an ideal time to do a few drills.
“They’ll usually find out the place we’re training a day or two before, but we’re trying to make it as realistic as possible so they just come into the situation and operate like they would on any call,” says Sioux Falls Fire Rescue Battalion Chief, Jay Titus.
Throughout much of the morning and into the afternoon, firefighters were practicing drills at the Ellis Grain Elevator. Each scenario is different. In one scenario, air monitors were used to check for hazards such as carbon monoxide.
Titus says their main focus is efficiency, which he hopes will close the gaps on any areas of training that may need to be strengthened.
