SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – No. 13-ranked Minnesota State (7-2, 4-0 NSIC) got back-to-back pins at 133 and 141 pounds helping the Mavericks to a 21-19 dual victory over No. 19 Augustana (7-5, 2-2 NSIC) on Saturday night.

Each team won five bouts on the night, but the consecutive pins propelled the Mavericks past the Vikings.

TJ North came out the gates firing to give the Vikings an early 3-0 lead against the Mavericks. North won a 5-3 decision over David Demo, who is ranked sixth in the country at 125 pounds.

Minnesota State took a 6-3 lead after the 133-pound bout when Alphonso Vruno pinned Augustana’s Jeremiah Peterson late in the second period. The Mavericks pushed their lead to 12-6 quickly in the 141-pound bout when Drew Lexvold pinned Brandon Charbonneau in 1:05.

MSU’s lead was cut to three at 12-9 after Nate Herda won by forfeit in the 149-pound bout. Shawn Hatlestad tied the dual at 12 picking up an 8-2 decision over Sawyer Hoffman at 157 pounds.

Minnesota State answered in the 165-pound bout with MSU’s Cody Quinn, who is ranked third in the nation individually, won a 5-0 decision over Parker Swanson, giving the Mavericks a 15-12 lead.

MSU extended its lead to 21-12 with back-to-back wins at 174 and 184 pounds. In the 174-pound bout, sixth-ranked Brendan Eichmann won an 8-3 decision over Tim Weber before fifth-ranked Aaron Norgren picked up a 4-1 decision over Sean Derry.

Jayd Docken, ranked sixth in the country at 197 pounds, brought the Vikings to within five (21-16) heading into the final bout earning an 11-2 major decision over Nathan Haynes.

Brian Schultz earned a 7-3 decision over Corby Running in the heavyweight bout but it would not be enough as the Vikings would fall to the Mavericks 21-19.

Augustana returns to Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action next Saturday and Sunday taking on northern State and Minot State on the road.
