Keeping Roads Safe With A Pair Of Storms

Bookmark and Share

“I have people covering 24 hours a day now,” said Galynn Huber.

Ice Sunday, fog and snow Monday night and Tuesday and then bitter cold at the end of the week can make keeping roads safe a challenge.

“Ice can get really gnarly out there, because you can't really see it. You hit it and you're hoping you're melting it,” said Huber.

With most of the ice gone, snow would be a welcome sight for snowplow drivers.

“If we start getting snow accumulations around 2 inches we may have to put the blades on and just kind of push the snow out of the driving lanes a little bit,” said Huber.

While most would think back-to-back storms would create havoc for workers, it keeps scheduling simple.

“It makes it easy because we're shifting. We don't have to change our work schedule. We don't have to bring someone in at night that wasn't scheduled at night. Basically, they are already on. So, it makes it a little easier to go to one event from another when they're back to back like this,” said Huber.

While temperatures look to return to sub zero. Huber is confident the roads will be fine.

“We can put our chemical on there, that's salt with our liquid calcium chloride mixed in with it. That will turn ice and snow to water at 0 degrees,” said Huber.
