Iowa Officials Say They're Paroling More Inmates

Bookmark and Share

Corrections officials in Iowa say a more aggressive approach to paroling inmates has lowered the state's prison population.

The Iowa Board of Parole told lawmakers Tuesday that the prison population has decreased by about 800 inmates. The number of parolees is up by nearly 24 percent in the fiscal year 2011 to 2012. It's on track to exceed the 4,015 paroles last year.

Department of Corrections Director John Baldwin says the department will continue to release low-risk probationers and parolees based on data. That will free up resources to better supervise and treat high-risk offenders.

Parole chairman Jason Carlstrom told the joint justice systems appropriations subcommittee that eventually the population reduction will stop, but not yet.

The state currently has about 8,000 inmates incarcerated.
