DWU signs 33 recruits

Bookmark and Share

MITCHELL, S.D. – After months of travel and recruiting, Dakota Wesleyan University football coach Ross Cimpl introduced the Tigers’ first 33 recruits for the 2013 season to the DWU campus and Mitchell community Wednesday morning at a signing day party at the Sherman Center on the Dakota Wesleyan campus.

Cimpl, who completed his first season as head coach at Dakota Wesleyan in 2012, said he was looking to focus on the offensive and defensive line positions as well as defensive back, wide receiver, running back and quarterback positions with this recruiting class. The Tigers added 18 offensive players and 15 defensive players to their roster with this first wave of recruits, including five offensive linemen and four defensive linemen.

Of DWU’s first 32 recruits, 18 come from within the borders of South Dakota. Four come from California, two each from Wyoming, Nebraska and Texas and the rest come from New Mexico, Minnesota, Iowa, Arizona and Idaho. On the offensive side of the ball, 11 are skill position players, including five wide receivers.

The Tiger defense took a hit to graduation this year. Three linebackers and three defensive backs graduate, including All-Great Plains Athletic Conference defensive back Dustin Bergmeier and linebacker Mike Barnaud. Running back Josh Endres – who holds the school record for rushing yards in a game, season and career – also graduates in May after a prolific four-year career. Six All-GPAC athletes graduate for the Tigers in May.

A handful of DWU’s latest recruits are transfers, and several are already on campus. Emery, S.D., native Tyson Kayser joins the Tigers after a season at Iowa Central Community College, and Tyndall, S.D. native Jared Van Winkle is on campus after a year at the University of South Dakota. Keagen Hadley joins the Tigers with freshman eligibility after a season at Minot State University in Minot, N.D.

“This recruiting class has a large number of guys who have the ability to make a significant contribution right away next fall,” said Cimpl, who went 6-4 in his first season as head coach. “I think the overall talent in this class is one of the best groups that we have ever had by signing day. I think coaches have done a tremendous job of addressing our needs and we have guys who can fill those needs for us immediately.”

Cimpl added that he is hoping to add a few more names to the Tigers’ 2013 roster, including more defensive backs and both offensive and defensive linemen.
