Augie pins Moorhead in final home match

SIOUX FALLS,S.D. – No. 17-ranked Augustana nearly shutout MSU Moorhead on Wednesday night earning a 39-3 victory in its final regular season dual.

Augustana won nine straight bouts on the night, including forfeits at 133 and 174 pounds en route to victory.

Augustana went up 11-0 early in the bout after TJ North gave the Vikings a 5-0 lead winning a 20-5 tech.fall over MSU Moorhead’s Mitch Dunlap at 125 pounds. The Dragons were open at 133 pounds giving Augustana’s Brandon Chesnut a win by forfeit.

The Vikings extended their lead to 14-0 after the 141-pound bout with Brandon Charbonneau winning an 8-2 decision over Angel Vega.

Nate Herda, ranked fourth in the country at 149 pounds, picked up his second pin of the season over MSU Moorhead’s Connor MacGregor to give the Vikings a commanding 20-0 lead. Herda won the bout by fall in 4:03.

The lead was extended to 23-0 when Shawn Hatlestad earned a 4-2 decision over MSU Moorhead’s Mariano Partillo at 157 pounds. Parker Swanson followed with a 6-0 decision over Kerron Williams at 165 pounds to push the lead to 26-0.

MSU Moorhead was open at 174 pounds giving Tim Weber a win by forfeit, extending Augustana’s lead to 32-0. Jeff Nielsen picked up a 3-2 decision over MSU Moorhead’s Lucas Moderow giving the Vikings a 35-0 lead heading into the 197-pound bout.

Wrestling up from his usual 184-pound weight class, Sean Derry dismantled MSUM’s Matt Lewellen in an 18-5 major decision at 197 pounds to put the Vikings in front 39-0. 

MSU Moorhead got on the board in the final bout of the night when Gerad Fugleberg won a 6-5 decision over Augustana’s Brian Schultz. Schultz clawed his way back into the bout getting three takedowns in the third period but Schultz gave Fugleberg an escape to attempt one final takedown and came up short.

Augustana will have a week off to prepare for the NCAA Super Regional 3 in Waterloo, Iowa on Feb. 24.
