Valentine’s Day is all about being with the one you love. For Gilbert and Elsie Buehner of Sioux Falls, that love has lasted a very long time.
“I suppose I did chase after her I guess you could say that!” said Gilbert Buehner.
The day Gilbert Buehner met his future wife Elsie, he had no idea she would be the one he would spend the rest of his life with.
“Here come these two little girls coming out of the chicken coop and we drove in and they looked at us and I looked at them and little did I know I would be marrying one of them sometime,” said Buehner.
Now, more than 60 years of marriage and 3 children later, he couldn't imagine a life without her.
While there marriage has seen its ups and downs, the couple said it's those challenges and obstacles in life that have made their love stay so strong.
They said the secret to their success is always being there for one another, no matter what life brings.
“I wouldn't say there is anything perfect about it. It's not like the TV perfect marriage. It's nothing like that at all. I'd be the last one to say that. It's a lot of changing and a lot of growing,” said Buehner.
Now they are marking yet another Valentine's Day together. This time, it’s at their home at Touchmark at All Saints, a retirement community in Sioux Falls where they ate sweets and reflected on their long and happy life together.
The couple has 3 grown daughters that come to visit them from time to time at the retirement home.
