Hy-Vee cake designers from around the region competed in the annual Cake Designer Challenge on Friday at the Empire Mall.
18 contestants from South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa and Nebraska competed in the challenge, working to decorate a variety of cakes, cookies and cupcakes. Each designer had to come up with their own theme and had to design their treats to match that theme. To add to the pressure, all the decorators had a time limit to get the work done.
"They have a three hour time limit for what they have to do. They have a half-sheet, a quarter cake sheet to do, 12 5-inch cookies and a multi-tier cake,” said Rick Mace, a Hy-Vee representative.
The top three artists earned cash prizes and advance to the Hy-Vee finals in Des Moines, IA on March 27th.
