Sen. Tim Johnson's Son Eyeing Bid

Bookmark and Share

Although Sen. Tim Johnson has not said whether he intends to seek re-election in 2014, some Democrats would like to keep his seat in the family -- and in Democratic hands.  Party activists are promoting the idea of Johnson's son, Brendan, who is the U.S. attorney for South Dakota, seeking the nomination if the senator retires, as some believe he will.  The elder Johnson, 66, has $1.2 million in his campaign account to use if he runs.  But he would face a tough race in a Republican-leaning state, and he still suffers some effects from a 2006 brain hemorrhage.

Brendan Johnson, 37, declined to discuss a possible race.  Former Democratic U.S. Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin is also considered a possible candidate.  On the Republican side, former Gov. Mike Rounds has announced plans to run.
