Fatal Brookings County Accident

Bookmark and Share

Icy and snow packed roads played a role in an accident that killed a Minnesota woman on Sunday.

Twenty year-old Madeline Gawreluk of Zimmerman, Minnesota was driving west on US 14 near Brookings, South Dakota when she lost control of her 1991 Chevrolet Blazer and went into the eastbound lane. Gawreluk’s vehicle collided with an eastbound 2010 Dodge Ram pickup driven by 70 year-old Maurice Melchert of Buffalo, Minnesota. A third vehicle, an eastbound Ford F150 pickup driven by 40 year-old Roberta Schley of Faribault, Minnesota, then collided with Gawreluk’s vehicle.

Gawreluk was taken to the Brookings hospital and then transferred to a Sioux Falls hospital where she died of injuries received in the crash.

Melchert and a passenger, 71 year-old Juanita Melchert, of Faribault, were treated at the Brookings hospital for minor injuries.

Schley and a passenger, 65 year-old Kathleen Kolterman, of Faribault, were not injured.

All occupants were wearing seat belts.
