With just one day until the conclave is set to begin, the Diocese of Sioux Falls held a mass to pray for the cardinals.
The mass began at noon Monday at St. Joseph Cathedral in downtown Sioux Falls.
Parishioners were praying that the cardinals elect the right person to guide the church of over one billion.
The first puffs of smoke from the Sistine Chapel are expected around 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Vatican.
Black from the burned ballots will mean there is no decision, white smoke will mean the cardinals have decided who will be the 266th pope.
