SD Governor Signs 3 Bills On Open Government

Bookmark and Share

South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard has signed into law three measures suggested by a task force that sought ways to make state and local government more open.

One bill requires that government agencies consider the ease and affordability of public access to information when they set up electronic record-keeping systems. Those agencies also have to tell people what information they hold to help people understand what they can request.

A second bill says three-member township boards would not violate the open meetings law if two or more members meet without giving public notice to do work previously approved in a public meeting. The third bill makes a minor clarification in what records are open.

Task force members say they hope to win legislative approval of other measures in future years.
