Little Snow, Big Problems

Bookmark and Share

If you were out and about during the day on Monday, you probably noticed that the weather was certainly active. A potent cold front had passed through the region Sunday night and Monday morning not only leading to a dramatic drop in temperatures, but also leading to some rather blustery conditions.

Here’s a list of some of the area’s highest recording wind speeds. Keep in mind that there were some higher recorded wind gusts across the state as well.

Along with the winds came the snow. It wasn’t much, though. Here’s a look at how much snow we picked up, or how little we picked up. This list is also followed by pictures of the blowing snow and low visibilities observed along I-29 in parts of the northeast. For quite some time on Monday, the South Dakota Department of Transportation advised no travel along I-29 in Grant County due to the blowing and drifting snow in these areas.

As we go through the overnight Monday into Tuesday, these winds are expected to die down quite a bit as temperatures plunge back into the single digits above and below zero. Despite the calmer winds, some schools have delayed or cancelled classes in parts of the northeast, so be sure to check our website for an updated list of these schools’ statuses.
