USD Seeks WBI Semifinal Berth On Sunday

BEAUMONT, Texas – Coming off of their first Division I postseason road win, the South Dakota women will attempt to advance to the WBI semifinals by topping the Lamar Cardinals at the Montagne Center on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. Pregame coverage will begin at 2:30 p.m. on KVHT.
Lamar (22-10, 12-6 Southland) is the second-seed in the west region of the tournament, while South Dakota (18-15, 10-6 Summit League) is the sixth-seed. This will be the first matchup between the two schools. Both teams finished third in their respective conferences.
The Coyotes, who are coming off a 77-69 win over Utah State on Thursday night, have won five of their last six games. In that stretch, USD has shot 50 percent from the field in the second half while holding opponents to 35 percent shooting. They also have scored 40 points or more in the second half four times in that stretch, including a 54 point second half effort against USU.
Alexis Yackley needs seven assists to pass Kelly Gese (’96-’01) for fourth on USD’s all-time leading assist list at 439. Yackley was an assist short of a double-double with an 11 rebound-nine assist performance on Thursday at Utah State. She had a double-double in the same stats with a 10 rebound-10 assist performance against Peru State on Dec. 15.
Nicole Seekamp scored a career-high 33 points against Utah State. She has shot 60 percent from the field and 55 percent from 3-point range over the last four games. She needs 13 points to record 500 for the season.
About Lamar: Lamar has won 39 straight non-conference home games. They are coming off a 70-48 win over Presbyterian in the tournament’s first round on Wednesday night. The Cardinals were led by Dominique Edwards and Carenn Baylor, who both scored 14 points.
Lamar played without leading scorer Kalis Loyd, who sat out with an ankle injury. Loyd averages 17 points per game and is Lamar’s all-time leading scorer (1,965 points). She is questionable for Sunday’s game.
Up next: With a win, USD will host McNeese State, who beat Elon 66-58 on Saturday. Date and game time are yet to be determined.
