Family Returns Home After Fire

Bookmark and Share

A Valley Springs family is back home Sunday night after a fire destroyed their home three weeks ago. On Mar. 9 fire crews were called to the home on 484th Avenue just after 12 p.m. When they arrived there was smoke and flames coming from the garage of the home. Flames quickly spread through the entire house, leaving the Boheman family with nothing.

“It was pretty traumatic watching it burn,” said Chad Boheman.

On a windy and cold day in March, the Boheman family could do nothing but watch their home slowly burn to the ground. And they were left with nothing but the clothes on their backs.

"You don’t know what to do, where to go, who to call or anything,” said Boheman.

For the past three weeks, Boheman said he and his family have been staying in a hotel. Instead of using insurance money to stay there any longer, they bought a camper, which now sits behind their charred home.

"Now it's the process of finding a home builder, that can do a floor plan to go by, and then get started on it,” said Boheman.

And it is a painful reminder of what once was there.

"The hardest part is looking at that burnt up house out there,” Boheman said. “My wife and I just got done remodeling the whole place and the whole outside. We started with the bedrooms and my daughter got to sleep in her new room for one night."

But it’s better than living in a hotel Boheman said, and they are happy to be back on their land. Their 6-year-old daughter Tasha can run around, even their dogs Gizmo and Lady, who survived the fire, are back home where they belong. All thanks to the help they’ve received from the community.

"Support we've had a lot of that, but I don't know about good luck,” Boheman said.

Luck the Boheman family hopes will change now that they are finally home and all back together again.

Boheman said the Valley Spring Fire Department would be burning down the rest of the house and using it for a practice exercise for fire fighters. Once the home is gone and it gets a little warmer outside, the family hopes to rebuild and get their lives back to normal.

On April 6, the Brandon VFW will hold a benefit for the Boheman family. Then on April 13, form 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. East Side Lutheran church is having a bake sale and suppe
