Bookmark and Share

Fort Collins, CO- The Sioux Falls Storm (2-2) were narrowly defeated 37-33 by the Colorado Ice (3-1) on Sunday afternoon in Colorado. A struggling passing attack with turnovers gave the Ice too many opportunities for points.

Sioux Falls Storm quarterback Dwight Dasher scored the first points of the game on a quarterback keeper but a missed extra point gave the Storm just six points with the possession. The Ice answered with a touchdown giving Colorado a slight lead of 7-6 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter began with Parker Douglass giving the Storm a 9-7 lead on a field goal. Douglass received another field goal opportunity later in the quarter but missed it. Storm defensive tackle Jeremiah Price sacked Colorado Ice quarterback Willie Copeland for a safety making it a 11-7 Storm lead late in the half. On the free kick following the safety, Colorado stopped the Storm in their own end zone giving the Ice a Safety.  At the half the Storm led the Ice 11-9.

The third quarter began with Colorado scoring points on the ground. Former Storm running back James Jones ran in a 1-yard touchdown for the Ice giving them a 16-11 lead. Dasher threw an interception for the Storm on the next drive giving Colorado momentum. Copeland added to the Ice’s lead by connecting with Justin Helwege through the air making it 23-11. Another touchdown for Colorado made it 30-11 late in the third quarter. Before the quarters end, Dasher ran in a 4-yard quarterback keeper. Colorado led the Storm after three quarters 30-18.

Douglass gave the Storm an early fourth quarter field goal making it 30-21 with a lot of game left. Copeland on the next drive connected with Helwege for the third time in the game giving Colorado a 37-21 lead over the Storm. The Storm gained much needed momentum as Dasher connected with Tatum through the air to make it 37-27 after a missed two point conversion. The Storm were able to strike again late in the fourth but still trailed 37-33. Time made it too little too late for the Storm as Colorado got the victory.

Dasher finished the game throwing for 117 yards and a touchdown through the air. Dasher also threw three interceptions but helped out on the ground as he ran for three touchdowns on 42 yards.

Copeland finished the game with 115 yards and three touchdown passes for the Ice as well as having one rushing touchdown. Helwege who had 36 total receiving yards caught all three.

The Storm play next on Sunday April 7 when they host the Green Bay Blizzard with a 3:05 kickoff at the Sioux Falls Arena.
