Augustana Preps For Elite 8 Date With Clayton State

Bookmark and Share

Well it's less than 24 hours until tipoff for the Augustana women's basketball team, and they were in the gym early on Monday getting ready for Clayton State.

"It's like a David and Goliath moment but I'm confident in my team and we just got play our game and come prepared."  Augustana Sophomore Guard Shaunteva Ashley says.

"You know I suppose we have to be a bit of an underdog and maybe that takes a little pressure off us going into the games."  Augustana Head Coach Dave Krauth says.

"Being the underdog so to speak you don't have anything to lose.  Just go out and go as hard as you can and hopefully you can prevail."  Augustana Senior Guard Cami Koehn says.

An early morning for the Augie women and they know Tuesday brings what could be easily their most challenging opponent they've faced all year.  With six of the Elite 8 coming in as one seeds Augustana, a sixth seed, will have their plates full during this tournament.

"We knew it wouldn't be easy.  Definetly, believe me, we knew it wouldn't be easy."  Augustana Senior Forward Alex Feeney says.

Players and coaches feel Clayton State should be just as worried about their matchup against the Vikings.

"Can't go into a game playing scared and we're not.  We're going to play our game and not let them control the pace of the game and attack."  Feeney says.

A small warmup before a big matchup on Tuesday.  A matchup that has this team feeling confident.

"Really confident in my teammates.  We've been coming together lately and playing as a team, it's been a team effort which is awesome.  If one person isn't hitting the next person is stepping up."  Ashley says.

"You know I'm confident in my teammates and what we can do so we'll see where it goes.  We just need to play Augie basketball and I think we'll do alright."  Koehn says.

Tipoff is at noon Tuesday at Saint Mary's University where the Augustana women's basketball team hopes to inch closer to a Division 2 national championship.
