Updated maps will move about 400 residents out of Rapid City's floodplain - and move about 400 other residents into it.
City Engineer Dale Tech says the updated floodplain maps issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency more accurately reflect what properties might be threatened by flooding. They are to take effect June 3.
Residents in a floodplain who have mortgages typically are required to buy flood insurance. If Rapid City chooses to remain in the National Flood Insurance Program, property owners can buy flood insurance from the federal government at a discounted rate.
