Sen. Tim Johnson's Plans After Politics

For the first time since 1978, South Dakota will have an open Senate seat. United States Sen. Tim Johnson announced Tuesday afternoon at his alma mater, the University of South Dakota, he will not run for re-election in 2014.

The decisioncomes as no surprise. Speculation ran rampant for months. But finally on Tuesday. after 17 years of serving in the United States Senate, with his wife, Barbara by his side, Sen. Tim Johnson announced he is retiring.
 
Although the Sen. Johnson said he feels great. He said he isn’t the same after suffering a life-threatening brain hemorrhage in 2006. He still uses a power chair to get around. The same power chair he used to get to the podium on Tuesday.
 
At the podium, Sen. Johnson said although he is retiring, he still has some work to do as Chairman of the Senate Banking Committee before his time is up in 2014. But when is all said and done, he wants to be remembered for one thing, bringing the party together.
 
Before his 15 minute speech was up, the 66-year-old Senator showed us just how witty he still can be. When asked if he did run, could he win?, he replied, "I’ve never been beat."

In 12 elections, Senator Tim Johnson hasn’t been beat. And now he never will be.

After his term is up in 2014, Sen. Johnson says he is looking forward to spending time with his wife and grandchildren. He said he will do so in the great state of South Dakota.
