Feds In ND Charge People In Jamaican Lottery Scam

Bookmark and Share

Federal prosecutors in North Dakota have unsealed indictments against 15 people accused of bilking victims from the Dakotas and elsewhere out of more than $1 million in a Jamaican lottery scam.

Charges against 11 defendants were made public Wednesday, after four people pleaded not guilty earlier to several charges, including mail and wire fraud.

North Dakota and South Dakota are the latest states whose residents have been victimized by a lottery scam originating in Jamaica. The scheme targets mostly elderly Americans. Authorities estimate that at least 30,000 telephone calls from Jamaica are made every day trying to defraud U.S. citizens.

Court documents show that one North Dakota woman lost more than $150,000 in the case. She was told to send money in order to receive a $19 million cash award.
