Augie Sweeps Southwest Minnesota State

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana opened Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action with a pair of wins over Southwest Minnesota State on Friday.  The Vikings took game one 5-3 before outlasting the Mustangs 7-5 in  the second.  Augustana improves on the season to 13-9 overall, 2-0 in NSIC action while SMSU falls to 5-11-1 overall, 0-2 NSIC.

GAME ONE
Jack Goihl went 3 for 3 at the plate for the Vikings and hit his first home run of the season. Jake Petersen led off the game with a triple to right center field and scored the game’s first run. Petersen was 2 for 4 and scored two runs.

Jordan Milbrath (3-0) earned his third win of the season tossing 6.1 innings and allowing six hits while striking out a season-high nine batters. Quame made his 12th appearance of the season and earned his sixth seed.

Petersen led off the bottom of the first inning with a triple to right center and scored the game’s first run when Nate Hewes grounded out to the shortstop.

After two and a half innings of scoreless baseball, the Vikings added a run in the bottom of the fourth on Goihl’s first home run of the season, taking a 2-0 lead.

Augustana pushed its lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Zach Dibble and Petersen started off the inning with consecutive singles before Nate Hewes moved Dibble to third when he flied out to right field. Dibble scored on a throwing error by SMSU’s catcher while Petersen stole second base to make the score 3-0.

Borchardt then tripled to left center field to score Petersen bring the score to 4-0.

The Mustangs got on the board in the top of the sixth inning when Nick Tillo delivered an RBI single down the left field line scoring Jordan Kontz who was hit by a pitch with one out, making the score 4-1.

Augustana got an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth inning to push its lead to 5-1 before the Mustangs made it a 5-3 game in the top of the seventh inning.

Steven Kramer hit a two run home run in the top of the seventh before Quame came in and closed out the game.

GAME TWO
Augustana took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Hewes scored as Viger reached on a fielding error. Hewes got on with a one out double to right field. SMSU tied the game at one scoring an unearned run in the top of the second.
 
The Vikings scored a run in both the third and fourth inning to go in front 3-1 before scoring four runs in the fifth pushing their lead to 7-1.
 
Viger led off the bottom of the fifth with a towering home run over the right field fence to make it a 4-1 game. Alex Fink then drove in two runs on a single to right field before Petersen delivered a sacrifice fly to center field to make the score 7-1.
 
Southwest Minnesota State made it a two run, at 7-5, game in the top of the seventh inning scoring four runs on five hits, but would be held at bay by the Vikings’ relief pitching.
 
Chad Becker escaped the jam in the seventh and Matt Musser relieved him in the eighth to keep the Mustangs scoreless.  Derek Quame came on in the ninth to shut down SMSU for his seventh save of the season and second in the day.
