A Pierre resident who has been on the South Dakota Board of Regents for 18 years is retiring this week.
James O. Hansen is retiring after this week's board meeting.
Hansen says being on the Regents has been an honor. Prior to becoming a Regent, Hansen spent 39 years in K-12 schools as a teacher, coach and superintendent. He then moved to Pierre to become state superintendent of schools from 1979-1987 and education secretary for Gov. Bill Janklow and George S. Mickelson in 1985-1990.
While on the Board of Regents, the 84-year-old Hansen has served as the board's president, vice president and secretary.
He says he hopes that he is remembered as a Regent "who made a difference."
