Target Field Ready For Chilly Opener

Bookmark and Share

MINNEAPOLIS, MN --  Minnesota sports fans may well wonder if the Vikings should be starting the season tomorrow afternoon.  Instead the Twins, the "boys of summer", will start the 2013 season with what could possibly be the coldest home game in franchise history.

The Twins play Detroit tomorrow at 3:10 with forecasts predicting that the game will be played in near freezing conditions with wind chills in the 20's.  The coldest home opener in Twins history was in 1962 against the Angels when the temperature dipped to 34 degrees.  The franchise record for coldest home game was set five years later, in 1967, when the Twins played the Yankees in 32 degree weather.  Tomorrow's game is the earliest home opener in Twins history.

Groundskeepers and staff have cleared the field and concourses.  In addition, Twins spokesman Kevin Smith says there will be more than 300 heaters on throughout every level of Target Field.  The team does admit, though, that the cold weather could be a reason the game is not yet sold out.

Justin Verlander will pitch for Detroit.  Minnesota counters with newcomer and former Philadelphia Phillie Vance Worley.
