SDSU, USD Track Teams Dual In Yankton

YANKTON, S.D. – South Dakota track and field went undefeated in head-to-head scoring while winning 23 of the 38 events ran at the Duals at Williams Field in Yankton on Saturday.

South Dakota, South Dakota State, North Dakota and Omaha competed at the meet.  The Coyote women went 3-0, topping Omaha 122 to 65, dropping South Dakota State 111 to 83 and beating North Dakota 125 to 53.  The Coyote men were 2-0 with a 136 to 48 victory over North Dakota and a 121.5 to 76.5 win over South Dakota State.  Omaha does not have a men’s track and field program.

Three Coyotes won multiple individual events.  Alexa Duling won the 100-meter hurdles (13.88 seconds) and the 400 hurdles (1:01.54), and Erik Hill won the 110 hurdles (14.89) and 400 hurdles (57.39).  Thrower Cody Snyder placed first in both the discus (184-6) and the shot put (56-7¼).

USD swept the top four positions in the men’s 5,000, with Brant Haase winning the race in 15:20.70.  Mubarik Musa was second in 15:27.89, Jeff Mettler was third in 15:30.12 and Alex Hohenthaner was fourth in 15:35.22.  Two of those finishers placed first in other events, with Mettler winning the 1,500 in 4:09.68 and Hohenthaner winning the 3,000 steeplechase in 9:45.43.

The Yotes also swept the top-three in two events.  Ashley Sveum (58.02) led Amber Ewers (58.97) and Tess Johnson (59.85) to sweep the women’s 400, and Emily Grove won the pole vault at 13 feet, 0¼ inches with Madison Mills placing second (12-6) and Hunter Wilkes in third at 12-0. 

South Dakota also had three of the top-four in the women’s 5,000.  Amber Eichkorn won in 18:15.13, while Ali Gress was third in 18:24.71 and Katie Wetzstein was fourth at 18:32.47.

Also recording individual wins for the Coyote women was Megan Glisar in the high jump (5-10½), Meghan Dennis in the javelin (136-5), Breanna Janovy in the shot put (44-2¾) and Tansha Clarke in the long jump (18-4½).

On the men’s side, Denton Stephens won the hammer throw (182-11), Jeff O’Connell won the long jump (23-2), Michael Burrus won the 100 (10.78) and Christian Nielsen won the 200 (21.39).

USD also swept both 4x400 relays, with women winning in 3:53.48 and the men winning in 3:24.55.

The Coyotes will next be in action at the Sioux City Relays on April 12 and 13.

YANKTON, S.D. – Brooke Garner broke her own school record today in the hammer throw. Garner recorded a distance of 198’ 11.00”. Garner also won the discus throw with a mark of 170’ 5.00”.  She now has won 28 events in her career as a Jackrabbit.

 

The Jackrabbits also had three other athletes finish in the top-ten of the hammer throw. Shelby Assmus finished second and set a new personal best by over 20 feet, she recorded a mark of 178’ 2.00”. Assmus’ mark ranks third in SDSU history.


Assmus also finished third in the discus event with her throw of 146’ 1.00”.


Amy Paulzine placed third in the javelin with her distance of 129’ 1.00”, she also placed eighth in the hammer throw with a distance of 154’ 2.00”.


In the long jump, Carly Carper placed third with a distance of 18’ 2.25”.


Alex Suhr ran the 3000-meter steeplechase in 12:07.02.


The 4x100-meter relay team won the event today with a time of 49.47.


In the high jump, Kali Olson placed fourth with her height of 5’ 6.50”. Her height today is a new personal best.


Tera Potts finished third in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:46.96.


Also in the 1500-meter run, Erin Hargens, Brooke Peterson and Karley Konkol finished sixth, seventh and eighth. They had times of 4:51.66, 4:57.31 and 4:58.90.

In the 400-meter dash, Jessica McDonald finished the event in 1:01.85.


Another big event on the day for Jackrabbits came in the 100-meter dash. SDSU finished one-two-three in the event. Carly Carper won the event with her time of 11.99, while Megan Bren placed second in 12.19 and Ashley Odegaard ran the event in 12.22 to claim third.


Krista Creager and Jessica Eibs both finished in the top-ten in the 800-meter run. Creager claimed fourth with her time of 2:21.00, while Eibs took eighth with her time of 2:24.22.


In the 400-meter hurdles, Lori Foltz finished fourth with a time of 1:06.88.


Bren and Odegaard both found success in the 200-meter dash with third and fifth finishes. Bren completed the race in 25.15, while Odegaard clocked-in at 25.36.


The 4x400-meter relay team completed the race in 4:15.36; they finished fourth overall.

Meghan Lambert took fourth in the triple jump with her mark of 35’ 11.50”. 


Amy Leifereman recorded a height of 10’ 00.00” in the pole vault competition.


SDSU placed two throwers in the top five in the shot put competition. McKenzie Johnson placed second with her distance of 43’ 2.25” and Assmus took fourth with a throw of 42’ 6.00”.


The Jackrabbits had three runners finish in the top-ten of the 5000-meter run. Erin Hargens placed second with her time of 18:15.13. Courtney Neubert was a few seconds behind Hargens as she finished fifth in 18:40.91. Cheyanne Bowers clocked in at 19:42.42 as she took tenth.


The Jackrabbits to travel to Sioux City, Iowa and Lincoln, Neb. to compete in a couple of meets next weekend. SDSU will be competing in the Sioux City Relays (April 12-13) and in the Nebraska Quad (April 13).
