Benefit For Family Injured In Valentine's Day Crash

A Sioux Falls family is lucky to be alive after they were involved in a car accident on 41st Street and Minnesota Avenue on Valentine's Day.

"We have a whole new appreciation for everybody and each other," said crash victim Ameina Wolf.

Ameina Wolf and her husband, Stephen, have a lot to be thankful for.

After the couple and three of their children survived the deadly multi-car accident, they say they're just grateful to be alive.

"Nobody believes something like that could ever happen to them and I guess I'm still kind of in that state of mind. It's just crazy to think that that happened to us and we were in that vehicle and that we all made it out of there okay," said Stephen.

They're also grateful to have their children by their side.

"We're so thankful and so appreciative of them and that God has spared them and spared us so we can be there with them," said Ameina.

While their children suffered minor injuries in the accident, Stephen had multiple broken ribs and Ameina was even worse off. She suffered a spinal fracture and shattered her shoulder, forcing her to use a walker to get around.

"My process has been slow, but we're getting there. With the help of my family, his family and the community it's amazing," said Ameina.

The couple is thankful for the help from community members like those at Visionary Eye Clinic in Sioux Falls. On Saturday, Ameina's co-workers at the clinic held a fundraiser in her family's honor. A free will donation was accepted for eye exams and they also held an eyeglass frame sale to raise money.

"It kind of feels good and I'm very thankful for everybody that is helping us out," said Anaya Wolf, the couple's 7-year-old daughter who was also in the accident.

Gloria Egeberg and her husband Gary were so touched they drove all the way from Volga, South Dakota just to show their support.

"We didn't know that she'd be here. We didn't know if she was still in the hospital. We've been praying for them and we're just excited to be here," said Gloria Egeberg.

It will take nearly two years for Ameina to fully recover from the accident and she says she's going to take life day-by-day.

"We are so thankful that everybody is here and thankful that we have all of our children and each other", said Ameina.

Ameina's step-daughter, Mattie, was the only child of the four not in the vehicle at the time of the accident.

Visionary Eye Clinic raised over $9,000 from the benefit. They also collected over 1,000 diapers.
