Large Spring Storm Underway

Bookmark and Share

No matter where you live in our region, if you’ve been outside this Tuesday morning; you’ve noticed that the weather is rather active. We’ve picked up quite a bit of moisture as of 9 AM Tuesday, and this storm is just getting started. In fact, this slow moving system is going to be with us for quite some time bringing us some much needed moisture. First of all, here’s a look at how much rain we’ve picked up in some locations. However, keep in mind that some of these locations have actually seen this fall in the form of snow; so this is simply the liquid equivalent of moisture we have seen from this system thus far.

Of course, with actual temperatures below freezing at the surface; quite a bit of this froze to the trees and power lines in parts of the southeast including Sioux Falls. Here’s a look at some of the pictures taken here at the KDLT studios in Sioux Falls. We’ve managed to pick up just under 0.25” of glaze on surfaces, which actually has caused our skycam to freeze to the point where we cannot move it left and right. Here are a few pictures taken by us here at the studios along with several viewer pics sent to us from Sioux Falls.

We also saw quite a bit of sleet fall in places like Mitchell before it all changed over to snow. Here’s a look at one picture sent to us from Main Street in Mitchell of the snow covering the sleet on the road.

Of course, we have picked up quite a bit of snow and there is more to come. Here’s a look at some of the area snowfall reports.

As for the remainder of this storm, we have a long way to go. Here’s a look at the amount of ice and snow we expect to see out of this system before it is all said and done. It looks like we will catch a brief break from the freezing rain and rain in Sioux Falls before it transitions into snow later this evening. After it has transitioned to snow, it could easily go back and forth between rain and snow, mainly across the southeast. Elsewhere, it should remain as snow.

Keep in mind that we do have Winter Storm Warnings in effect for much of the state through 7 PM Wednesday, April 10. These counties are highlighted in pink. The surrounding counties highlighted in blue are under Winter Storm Watches and the counties highlighted in purple are Winter Weather Advisories. Of course, these are subject to change throughout the day, so stay tuned to KDLT and KDLT.com for the very latest.
