A major winter storm carrying strong winds, heavy snow and freezing rain across South Dakota have forced state officials to open the state Emergency Operations Center.
Lt. Governor Matt Michels ordered a level three activation, which means a limited number of staff members from state agencies will monitor conditions and coordinate response together. Agencies involved include the Office of Emergency Management, South Dakota Highway Patrol and the Department of Transportation.
Michels says activating the Operations Center allows for coordination across state, local, tribal and private agencies. He says it is also a sign to citizens that this is a serious storm and should not be taken lightly.
