Ten a.m. flight to Chicago, canceled. Twelve p.m. flight to Chicago, canceled. Twelve p.m. flight to Denver, also canceled. This is what travelers had to look forward to at the Sioux Falls Regional Airport on Tuesday.
Christine Breamer of Indiana said, "It was supposed to be at 12:50 p.m. but they've already canceled."
Outside the airport, it didn't look much better as crews spent much of the morning looking at planes from above, rather than from below.
Breamer said, "(It's) horrible, it's freezing rain, sleeting. I couldn't believe when people drove here. The wind is so crazy."
Beamer is hoping to get to Indiana, but found out her flight to Indianapolis was cancelled.
"They put me on a flight tomorrow, but since it's supposed to get worse tomorrow, I thought I would just show up at the airport and see if I could get on stand-by," said Breamer.
Like Beamer's, a lot of flights heading to and from Minneapolis, Chicago and Denver were cancelled. Others were experiencing delays up to several hours. There were a few lucky ones though. When we talked to John and Kathy Merkwan Tuesday morning, their flight to Chicago was still on-time.
Kathy Merkwan said,"Right now there's a lull so there's still hope but there's no guarantee so we'll just wait and see."
Just to be safe, the couple drove from Yankton Monday night, and arrived at the airport at 10:00 a.m.
"Instead of driving up today to catch out flight, we decided to try and miss some of the ice on the roads this morning," said Kathy Merkwan.
A spring storm, showing travelers it doesn't hurt to have a back up plan.
Breamer said, "I called my hotel, and had them hold a room until six tonight so worse case scenario, I don't get on the flight, I spend a little extra time hanging out in Sioux Falls."
Hoping everything works itself out.
