The Spring Storm Continues...

Bookmark and Share

Our latest blast of winter like weather continues through Tuesday night where heavy snow, freezing rain, and sleet can be expected.  The storm has lived up to expectations so far, but there are some signs that this storm may change slightly going through the next couple of days.  The orientation of the heavy snow band may shift a little bit which could have some implications on how much snow falls in certain areas… for the details…. Keep reading.

First off… large amounts of precipitation can be expected through Thursday.  Here is the forecast from the Hydrometeorological Prediction Center (HPC) on how much liquid equivalent precipitation the U.S. will see from Tuesday evening through Thursday evening.

Another inch or more of liquid is expected south of highway 12…. Wow!

Some of this will be falling as freezing rain creating very icy conditions across the southeast.  Here is the latest look at the expected additional ice accumulation.

Definitely enough to bring down more trees and power lines in areas that have already been seeing that take place.

And now the snow… I mentioned that the overall orientation of the heavy snow band has shifted… well it appears to be shifting southeast.  Here is the snowfall forecast from 2 different computer models showing snow accumulation through Friday morning.

Notice that much of southern South Dakota is now coated with an additional 8 to 14+ inches.  That is more than is currently forecasted for the southeast… but still think it’s a long shot.

Here is another take on the upcoming snow that I like to show.  The following images are the probability of receiving at least 2, 4, 8, and 12 inches of snow from Tuesday evening through Thursday evening produced by the HPC.

According to the HPC, much of the area has at least an 80 percent chance of 2 inches of snow with central South Dakota the best location for the heaviest snow of 8 and even an additional 12 inches.

Here is a peak at some of the snow totals as of Tuesday afternoon.  Your backyard totals will vary and we will get an update on all of the totals Wednesday morning from the National Weather Service.
