Spring Storm Taking Its Toll On Trees

This spring storm is leaving its mark on South Dakota. In the Sioux Empire, the storm hit early Tuesday morning with rain and high winds quickly turning into sleet and thick layers of ice.


The conditions have taken a toll on trees and their branches, many even splitting in half.


Emergency vehicles responded to calls all over the city, and while some people need help from emergency officials, others are taking things into their own hands.


Resident Robert Mickiewicz said, "I just figured, why wait for the city to do it, might as well just take it into my own hands and do it myself."


Robert Mickiewicz spent a few hours cleaning up branches and clearing the lane on East 26th Street in front of his home. He says he wasn't expecting the mess but doesn't mind the extra work.


Mickiewicz said, "Oh, God has blessed me so far. I haven't had any on my house, but my neighbor over there, half a tree went through the back of their house.”


Just across the street, Kenneth Mays woke up to a loud noise and realized he wasn't so lucky.


Resident Kenneth Mays said, "I heard a big boom, so I got dressed, walked out here, saw the tree through the roof and we were just talking about cutting it down yesterday."


Tuesday morning's ice storm brought down a massive tree onto the roof of a house on East 26th Street. And not only did it fall on the roof, it fell right into the room where the baby sleeps.


Mays said, "I was just glad to see everybody was ok. It was just crazy."


And while Mays is feeling the impact of this storm, Mickiewicz admits it's just a normal part of living in the Midwest.


Mickiewicz said, "It's South Dakota, you know, you get snow in September and snow in April, so what's the difference?"


Sioux Falls Public Works will be using heavy equipment to push large branches out of the street before the bulk of the snow hits.


Officials don't expect to have all the trees picked up until the end of the week.
