More Snow on the Way

Bookmark and Share

The first two rounds of this storm are over with and now it’s time for round three.  After heavy snow for parts of western and central South Dakota and heavy rain and freezing rain in the east, it’s hard to imagine that more is still on the way.  This time though, it will be all snow.  Bands of moderate to even heavy snow are expected to develop late Wednesday and stick around through the first half of Thursday mostly east of the James River.  This will be the majority of snow accumulation that will fall in the east. But of course we have already experienced a bunch.  Below is a look back at what we have already received and a look ahead at what’s to come…

Here is a look at the snow and rainfall totals that we have already received as of 9am Wednesday morning.  These are just estimates so your totals will vary, but it definitely paints a picture of how much precipitation has fallen.

Notice that the heaviest rainfall amounts are in the southeast with upwards of 2 inches falling in northwest Iowa, but the heavy snow so far has stayed in the western half of South Dakota with more than 2 feet falling in parts of the Black Hills and West River locations.

For the southeast, it’s been pretty much all rain and ice since it started more than 2 days ago.  Check out some of the ice accumulation totals we have received.  These are official measurements with some local spots like the south side of Sioux Falls picking up more than an inch of ice.

The good news is it looks like the ice event is over.  The bad news… heavy wet snow will be falling across many of these areas adding weight to trees and power lines that are already struggling.  Here is what we can expect for additional snow accumulation through Thursday afternoon…

Stay away from all trees and power lines through this storm as they will likely continue to break with the added weight of the snow… stay tuned to KDLT and KDLT’s Facebook page for the latest updates.
