Sanford Health announced in a news release that it has immediately withdrawn from merger discussions with Fairview Health Services.
CEO Kelby Krabbenhoft says that Sanford Health has a “philosophical policy of only going where we are invited” and did not feel welcome by interested parties and key stakeholders at Fairview.
Krabbenhoft says the company withdrew from merger discussions to avoid "ruining Sanford Health’s reputation."
Sanford Health may pick up merger discussions again if they can resolve issues between Sanford, Fairview, The University of Minnesota and have “secured a positive relationship” with Minnesota Attorney General Lori Swanson.
Attorney General Lori Swanson pressed Sanford to explain its motive and how a takeover would impact the state's health care at a public hearing last Sunday.
Two Minnesota lawmakers, Rep. Joe Atkins and Rep Dan Schoen, introduced bills on Monday that would block any entity from outside the state from taking control of the University of Minnesota’s hospitals.
