Winter Storm Wraps Up

Bookmark and Share

Round three of the April 2013 winter storm got underway late Tuesday afternoon and has blanketed the eastern half of South Dakota, northwest Iowa, and southwest Minnesota in snow.

Here is a look at the snowfall totals we have seen across the region from 9am on Wednesday to 9am on Thursday. These are just estimates so your totals will vary, but it definitely paints a picture of how much precipitation has fallen.

Now here is a look at the 72 hour storm totals, beginning Monday at 9am lasting until Thursday at 9am. Spots in the Black Hills recorded over two feet of snow and in our West River locations there were several reports near 20 inches.

We have not received any official storm totals from the National Weather Service, but this map is a good tool that we are able to use in order to estimate storm totals. It puts into perspective how different storm totals can be over shortened distances.

Heavy snow bands formed overnight and rapidly moved northwestward dumping snow on areas on the eastern side of the Missouri River. Snowfall rates close to 1.25-1.5”/hr were recorded in western Minnesota and moved westward into northeastern South Dakota early Thursday morning. While accumulations were not as much as in West River locations, snow totals during the overnight hours into early Wednesday morning were very impressive as some spots picked up more than a foot in just under 12 hours!

Check out some of the ice accumulation totals we have received.  These are official measurements with some local spots like the south side of Sioux Falls picking up more than an inch of ice.

Travel remains hazardous as downed trees, power lines, and ice still may be covering the roads in select areas. Stay tuned to KDLT and KDLT’s Facebook page for more updates about this Winter Storm.
