Rain, Snow, and Ice Returns

Bookmark and Share

If you’ve been outside this Saturday evening, you’ve probably noticed that precipitation is now beginning to fall across much of the region. Unfortunately, some of that is falling in the freezing form rather than liquid, so there is a little more inclement weather to talk about.

The good news is that this storm isn’t necessarily going to be affecting the same areas that saw freezing rain this past week. Nevertheless, it’s still going to be just enough to cause some travel inconveniences and possibly some downed trees and power lines in parts of the northeast, depending on just how much ice we do see.

As we go through the overnight, a warm front will be lifting northward across the region allowing for snow to develop north of the front and rain south of the front. In between, where surface temperatures are below freezing, we may be seeing more freezing rain during the overnight.

It does look to bring some much needed rainfall. Here’s a look at just how much rainfall will likely be associated with this system along with the snowfall it will produce, which should be mostly confined to areas along and north of US Highway 12 from Milbank to Mobridge.

Of course, with the clash of these two precipitation types; it looks like we could pick up anywhere from a quarter to a half inch of ice after the snow has fallen.

With these things in mind, Winter Weather Advisories, Winter Storm Warnings, and Ice Storm Warnings are in effect for parts of our area. Here’s a look at these advisories and warnings as of Saturday evening.

Of course, keep it here on KDLT and KDLT.com for more updates on this spring storm.
