USD junior Jeff Mettler is one of the nation's top distance runners....
...And that kind of surprises him.
I've always set goals but I've had to constantly re-evaluate those goals because I keep doing better than I'm expecting so I keep having to raise my goals and raise my expectations." Mettler says.
That's because Jeff keeps getting better. He was the MVP of the Summit League Indoor championships after winning the mile and 3,000 meter.
"I think we really feel like he will be on of the first Division One men's All-Americans at the University of South Dakota. I don't want to put that on him that it's expected but I think it will happen. If not this year than next year." USD Head Coach Dave Gottsleben says.
Not bad, especially since Jeff never expected to run track in college. The Eureka native came to USD on an academic scholarship.
"It wasn't that I didn't want too, I just didn't really know that it was an option. I mean, I was pretty good in high school, but I was nothing special. But (coach) Fitz saw something in me." Mettler says.
"Quite honestly we're lucky. We're very fortunate to have him here. Not every high school athlete that's really, really successful can make it in college. You really have to have a love for the sport and Jeffrey does." Gottsleben says.
Now Jeff shares his coaches All-American vision.
"I don't like to come right out and say that kind of stuff but, I mean, that's in the back of my mind. It's the next logical step to make." Mettler says.
After all Jeff's goals usually end up like his races. Give him time, and he usually wins.
