The Rapid City Council has decided to consider the services of several organizations that have offered to help the city if it is sued over the council's practice of having a local minister lead a prayer to start meetings.
The nonprofit Freedom from Religion Foundation has expressed concern about the practice. The group that advocates for the separation of church and state has not explicitly threatened to sue Rapid City but has said it expects to resolve the prayer issue in courts across the country if necessary.
The council voted unanimously Monday night against establishing a policy calling for prayers at meetings. Alderman Jerry Wright says the council will continue to look at the prayers as tradition.
