Drought Eases as the Snow Flies

Bookmark and Share

The sounds of scrapers and shovels have become common place over the last couple weeks as the third major April storm rolled through the area.  Daily snowfall records fell in 4 cities Thursday; Sioux Falls, Mitchell, Huron, and Sioux City.  The old records date back more than 100 years ago in some cases.  Widespread amounts of 2 to 7 inches were tallied from northern Nebraska into central Minnesota even with the April sunshine that typically warms temperatures into the 60’s this time of year.  Not all bad news though as the moisture seen over the last couple of weeks has allowed soil moisture to drastically improve and brought every single location in the region at least one category lower on the drought monitor.  Below is a list of those snow totals plus a look at the current drought monitor when compared to the last couple of weeks.
