City Begins Clearing Parks & Trails

Bookmark and Share

It’s now been over a week since the major spring storm of 2013 struck the Sioux Empire, and there’s still a lot of cleaning up to do.

But if you take a look around, there are many signs of notable progress. Now, city crews in Sioux Falls are shifting their attention from cleaning up residential areas to the city’s parks and trails.

"Those parks that are in some of the oldest parts of our city had a lot of large mature trees and there's a lot of branches down,” says Mark Cotter of the City of Sioux Falls Department of Public Works

The storm brought all sorts of inconveniences: power outages, damaged vehicles, and just the cold itself; but with the scars of the storm just as visible in our parks as they are at home, it seems like there’s no escaping it.

"We'll make very good progress with the parks just like we've done with the neighborhoods. There's a whole strike team that's coordinating that work and again; next week, I believe we'll start to really see traction in the recovery efforts through the parks,” says Cotter.

The city is tapping into other resources such as the Department of Corrections, hoping to get the parks and bike trails cleared of all the debris just in time for the warmer weather.

"We feel like that's a great place to deploy them. Start gathering that material and ultimately once it's in to a material parking lot or to an adjacent roadway; there will be teams that will come around and pick that material up,” says Cotter.

This is a step that will get us a bit closer to getting the damage repaired with summer right around the corner.
