A guard at the South Dakota State Penitentiary is recovering after he was assaulted by an inmate.
This is the third serious assault since Ronald Johnson was killed at the state pen in Sioux Falls in April of 2011.
Authorities say Zane Mathis was punched several times in the head and suffered facial cuts and a broken jaw Saturday night. He was taken to a Sioux Falls hospital.
28-year-old Carlos Green had to be subdued by other prison staff and part of the prison was on lockdown until Sunday night.
Green is serving a 42-year sentence for aggravated assault and throwing urine at jailers in Brown County.
The department of corrections tells us Corporal Mathis had surgery and will remain hospitalized another day or two.
