Taking Care Of Damaged Trees After Storm

Bookmark and Share

Earth Day, a reminder that we only have one home, planet earth. It’s true, even, on a day when Mother Nature throws a curveball, late April snow.

“It's earth. It's Mother Earth and she does what she wants,” said Duane Stall, the Director of Forestry for Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation.

Two weeks ago Mother Nature may have taken her privileges a bit too far. Ice weighed down trees all over Sioux Falls, causing thousands of branches to snap.  But, as the cleanup continues, what can people do to keep their trees safe in the years to come?

“Any wound to a tree compromises its ability to protect itself from insects and diseases,” said Stall.

That is where trimming the tree comes into play.

“If you have a broken branch, you want to take it back to a place where the tree can grow over that wound,” said Stall.

“The last resort would be to remove the tree,” added Stall.

Getting to some places on a tree can be tricky, that's where hiring an expert can make all the difference.

“If the tree or the project is bigger than they can take on, higher the professionals that do that for a living,” said Stall.

And the Parks Department will be doing just that. Knowing, that one storm will give them years of work.

“We'll be in the parks for years addressing minimizing those wounds,” said Stall.

When this Earth Day snowfall eventually melts and plants continue to bud, the healing for South Dakota trees will only be beginning.
