Record Cold Tue-Wed, Warm Weekend Ahead

Bookmark and Share

No doubt the last few weeks have been frustrating for many in the Upper Midwest; plenty of snow and record cold temperatures.  In fact, it now looks like April 2013 will be in the running for the coldest April on record for Sioux Falls.  Many cities across the area will likely have their top 5 coldest April ever.  Tuesday was no different… look at how cold we were thanks to the fresh coat of snow.  Smashed some daily records by more than 10 degrees and this was the latest that Huron has ever reached the single digits.  Not really a record you want to break.  Unfortunately, we in for more near record cold Wednesday morning as temperatures dip to the upper teens and low 20’s in many areas, but at least it will be warmer than Tuesday.  Here’s the good part; Temperatures will now be on the rise.  By the time the weekend rolls around, a lot of us will be flirting with something we haven’t seen in quite some time…. The 70’s!  All the details on the cold and the warm up can be found below.

Another cold one set for Wednesday morning.  Here are the records for the date versus the forecast lows for the morning hours.

I wasn’t joking that temperatures would once again be quite cold.  Here are a few facts about April 2013 for Sioux Falls that I really didn’t want to bring up, but unfortunately, we are definitely in the running for coldest April on record.

As it stands now, Sioux Falls is about 2.5° below the record with less than a week to go.  But with 60’s and 70’s in the forecast, this average temperature may rise pretty fast over the next few days.  My philosophy is if it’s gonna be this cold in April, we might as well break a few records and get credit for it!

Here is just one more example of how different this “spring” has been so far.  The graphic below shows the number of times our highs have been in these 10 degree increments since March 1st of this year, and from March 1st to April 23rd of last year.  Notice the HUGE difference.

It isn’t even a competition with last year just blowing 2013 out of the water.  However, our warm up is about to begin.  The 3 images below show 850mb temperatures according to one of the forecasting models we look at.  Remember that 850mb temperatures are located about 5000 feet above the surface and are rarely influenced by what happens on the ground (which is why we look at them).  The first image shows the temperatures Tuesday afternoon, the second image shows temperatures Friday afternoon, and the third images shows temperatures Sunday afternoon.

Pretty easy to see the difference isn’t it?  Well, our temperatures at ground level will mirror what happens several thousand feet above by climbing drastically the next few days.  That red color for Sunday….. it shows the potential for 80’s!
